Obviously the workaround is to stay away from Fisherman's Wharf.

Zipping past Fisherman's Wharf, Chris Paget's scanner downloaded to his laptop the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians' electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags. Within an hour, he'd "skimmed" four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet.

"There's a reason you don't wear your Social Security number across your T-shirt," Albrecht says, "and beaming out your new, national RFID number in a 30-foot radius would be far worse."

But Gigi Zenk, a spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Licensing, says Americans "aren't that concerned about the RFID" in a time when "tracking an individual is much easier through a cell phone."

I know, I've been kinda quiet. I've been super busy. Freelance jobs, clothing sorting, home purging, you name it.

So I have spent most of today terrified that I was getting sick. I'm having surgery on Thursday. I cannot get sick! I'd have to reschedule, and my mom has plane tickets, and my FMLA leave and...gah, nightmare.

Last night my throat felt...well, not sore, exactly, but not quite normal. Today, same deal. It's not sore, just slightly...I dunno, it's hard to explain. It's probably about 50% me over-scrutinizing my physical state because I'm terrified of getting sick.

I'm about 95% sure that I'm not. If I were really getting sick, and my throat went wonky last night, by now I'd be feeling definitively sick, and I'm not. But that doesn't mean I haven't been mainlining fluids and drinking Emergen-C like I'm getting paid today. Oh, I have.

I've also spent the day appreciating my AWESOME NEW RECLINER. I've been wanting a recliner, just cause they're cool, but also because I'm advised that a recliner is often a recuperating patient's best friend. You can get up out of it easier, you can nap or even sleep in it if required, and so on. But I desperately didn't want one of those hideous giant puffy things. You know, like this:

So I patiently stalked Craigslist, unwilling to fork over actual retail, knowing that sooner or later someone would post a recliner I could live with. And just last week, my patience was rewarded! I am now the proud owner of this recliner:

I purchased it from a nice young man who was moving and getting rid of all his (quite nice) furniture. I got it for $50! I love that it's not obviously a recliner, it's new and nice-looking, and it's very comfortable. It's leverless, you just push with your pack for it to recline and push down with your legs to return it. The back part even comes off for ease of moving.

And it's amazing how well it matches my other furniture! Here is the chair that used to sit where the recliner now sits:

And a little corner chair I got on sale at Target that no one ever sits in:

All three chairs have nearly the same wooden arms! The furniture gods smile upon me once again.

I also finished hanging all my new needlepoints in the Stairway of Kitsch. I need more small ones. When you hang a lot of large pieces over an angled space, you end up with spaces.

Adam and Jamie have been keeping me company today. Thanks, Discovery channel, for Mythbusters marathons.

Henry kicks back with a beer
Originally uploaded by Nooks

I read The Burrowers Beneath by Brian Lumley yesterday. Today I'll be at an anthology featuring Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long, and Colin Wilson; I'm in a Lovecrafty mood and that ought to wash the Titus Crow taste out.

also I keep seeing Titus Crow mentioned on the internet as being similar to Dr. Who and that had better not be true or else my respect for a lot of you just went way the fuck down

It's time for the 2009 SFBG Best of the Bay readers' poll. We made a pretty good showing last year, including winning "Best Dance Club". Let's see if we can do that again, shall we? Categories in this year's poll that are applicable to DNA and our alumni include: "Best Overall Bar", "Best Cocktails", "Best Dance Company", "Best Dance Club", "Best Rock Club", "Best After-Hours Club", "Best DJ", "Best Burlesque Act", "Best Local Blog", and (oddly buried way at the end) "Best Bar".

I've changed the calendar pages a bit, and added links that makes it easy for you to add an event into your personal calendar. It handles iCal and Outlook (they're actually the same) and also Google and Yahoo calendars.

It looks like this now:

Add this event to
your calendar:

· Apple iCal
· Outlook
· Google
· Yahoo
· MySpace
· Facebook
· Going
· Upcoming
· SonicLiving

It used to look like this:

Are you going? Let
your friends know on
MySpace, Facebook,
Going, Upcoming and
SonicLiving.

Most other sites tend to hide this stuff under a +Share box that does a Javascript popup filled with a bunch of "Nascar badges" for the various sites. I'm not sure if that would make this more clear, or less. I'm guessing less.

Annoyingly, the API for getting events into the Google calendar won't take URLs that are more than 705 bytes long, so I had to truncate the event description on that kind.

You can also subscribe to our full calendar feed in most calendar programs, of course, but this lets you put events in your personal calendar à la carte.

Let me know if you find any problems with this stuff, or have suggestions.

I keep making the assumption that if we make it easier for people to electronically tell their friends and stalkers about their plans, this will translate into more bodies through the door. It's hard to tell if it's working.

Remember yesterday when I asked everyone to "fan" the DNA Lounge Facebook page so that I could set a user name on it? Well, it turns out that they only let you set user names on pages if you already had more than 1,000 fans last month, so the fact that we have more than 1,000 now doesn't matter to them. Oh well...

Also, this is old news (in more ways than one) but I just noticed this video on Youtube of Alien Sex Fiend performing at DNA Lounge in 1991. (Actually I'm guessing this was the Nov 1990 show, since as far as I know their next show here was June 1992.)

There's also an interview with them from the same show, which is pretty terrible, but I note it only because at around 1:30 and 4:24 in the interview clip you can tell that they're sitting upstairs in the lounge, and that the bricked-over windows on the back wall have glass in them, and are painted black! I had forgotten that they used to look like that.

This is from a local public-access music video show called "Post" that I remember watching. They seem to have shot a lot of shows at DNA. Many of the truly ancient clips I've found have come from there. I wonder if it's possible to get DVDs of this show somehow... With a name like "Post", it is, of course, completely ungooglable.

I am writing this post on an airplane at about 32,000 feet en route from NYC to South Florida, and I can't believe almost exactly 120 hours from now, I will be landing in San Francisco for [info - community]azkatraz! Keep your eye on the LJ Spotlight next week, btw, and don't be surprised to find random mentions of Azkatraz in various magazines, papers and blogs over the next week or so.

[info - personal]yourlibrarian reports that fanfiction is now a dictionary term! Hurrah!

To celebrate (no, not really, but it works!) FictionAlley is hosting a dinner at the Tonga Room a week from Sunday (July 19) in San Francisco. You don't have to have you fic or art or meta hosted on FictionAlley to attend, and you don't have to be registered for Azkatraz - you just have to enjoy Harry Potter and have some interest in a Polynesian-esque dinner in a very kitschy restaurant with extremenly kitschy drinks.

Cost is $25 per person, plus whatever you drink that isn't water or coffee, and you need to RSVP to me by Monday afternoon by commenting on this post or emailing me at heidi @ fictionalley.org (without the spaces). Payable that night, or via paypal beforehand. Spread the word!

I'll be making a post this evening or tomorrow on the Az website about a new addition to the MPA schedule at ZEUM on Monday - one of the creators of the Bertie Botts flavours of Jelly Bellys will be talking about the creation process, and hosting a bit of a tasting at the MPA luncheon, which you can only attend with an MPA registration. We're even going to get to hear about some of the flavors that WB rejected, which I think will be incredibly amusing.

There's a smattering of photos from last night's HBP premiere on my twitter so this was either a very good time or a very bad time for loudtwitter to stop crossposting. Not sure if I am going to move to that new site or not, at least not until after ComicCon, because I'm going to be twittering a lot about panels and interviews, etc. And the headbands I got in NYC today, which I'll be wearing in California - only one of them is pink. But it is very, very pink.

Have not seen Torchwood, but I have willingly spoiled myself - hope to catch up on all of it when I fly out to SF on Wednesday. I watched the first part while flying to NC on Tuesday but the download I did on Tuesday night didn't work, so I'm stockpiling. And on LJ I am at skip=650, which brings me back to about Tuesday. Am saving full reaction posts to read once I've seen it all.

When is Leverage back with S2, btw? Will I miss a lot of it while I'm traveling? And why are *they* not at Comic Con? It's definitely geeky enough!

Oh! Does anyone want a pair of tickets to HBP at Azkatraz? Since I saw it last night, I don't need to go again so soon. 25 bucks for the pair if you want them (since everyone is going to get $5 back when they pick up their tickets, since the sums paid were more than the tickets ended up costing). To avoid giving Sandy the Registrar more annoyance, I'll pick up the tickets and have them to give to whoever takes them off my hands on Thursday afternoon.evening.

Kids are off in canada. Send off was easier this year.

Lina went for a 10 month weight check, she was 17lb, 7oz, which puts her up a pound and some change since ehr 9 month visit.

Her Pa came down from new york to meet her. She charmed him the entire short visit, and now she's panting at the doggie.
